The end of a busy summer…

I can’t believe the end of Summer 2009 is here. :(

We’ve been incredibly busy this summer. We removed our above ground swimming pool, had a roof built over our backyard deck and had the house re-roofed.

I spent the Labor Day weekend adapting the original deck to the new roof. I got the corners squared off and some of the original deck boards replaced. I’ll continue replacing the deck boards as time and $$$ allows.

We’ve enjoyed the new addition to our home. The roof blocks the hot afternoon sun and we can actually be outside and enjoy it now! We do miss the swimming pool though, especially Madison and her friends. :(

I’ll try to post some new pics of the deck work as it progresses.

Madison is a 2009 AAU Gymnastics National Champion!

She competed in the 2009 AAU Gymnastics National Age Group Championship at the Savannah Civic Center, Savannah, GA.

We arrived in Savannah on June 24th and attended the Opening Ceremonies of the competition.

Madison competed on Saturday, June 27th at 8:00 a.m. in Session 12A-Squad D of the 12 year old age bracket. She competed against 10 other gymnasts from Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina.

Madison had a great morning placing first in two events (beam and bars) and placed first in All-Around!

Her results were:

Vault: 5th place (8.900)
Floor: 3rd place (9.275)
Uneven Bars: 1st place (8.975)
Balance Beam: 1st place (9.050)
All-Around: 1st place (36.200)

We’ve got tons of pics, just click –> here <– to view the pics.

Around our home…

One year ago we had our own  little “redneck riviera” happening in our backyard. We enjoyed spending our summers lounging in and around the pool area.

Then, in the fall of last year Hurricane Ike, after tearing up the Gulf Coast, made its way inland and the winds from that storm reached West Tennessee. He (Ike) wasn’t kind to us and in a span of about 5 seconds he destroyed our pool and Madison’s trampoline.

So we’ve made the decision to do away with the pool and upper deck and add a roof over the original deck. The destruction of the upper deck and pool is our responsibility. We’ve removed the upper deck. The pool is next.

We’ve hired a local contractor to build the deck roof addition and re-roof our house.  The crew started work Friday, May 29, 2009 and finished July 3, 2009.

Ouch! I’ve been bitten… by the genealogy bug.

I attended a reunion of the descendants of my paternal grandfather, Maurice Wilson Graves, Sr. on Easter weekend of this year. While visiting with family members during the reunion I realized just how little I actually know about my own ancestory.

So, the search is on.

I’ve invested in software (Legacy Family Tree v.7) to keep track of the information I collect. I’m not much of a pencil and paper person. When it comes to written material I’m terribly unorganized and to me it’s such a pain in the rear to write, label, file, etc. I’d much rather type it in and let the computer do the boring work. ;)

I’ll be researching and recording information about my maternal family, the Bakers of Camden, Benton County, Tennessee, and my paternal family, the Graves of Medina, Gibson County, Tennessee.

I’m also researching and recording information about my wife’s maternal family, the Pentecosts, and her paternal family, the Dublin’s, all of Mayfield, Graves County, Kentucky.

If you have any information about any of these families I would be most interested in recording it and filling out more “branches” of the family tree.

I’m also very interested in old family photos and documents that can verify a persons existance such as birth and death certificates, deeds, census data, newspaper clippings, etc.

So… if you’re reading this and you can provide any information about any of the families listed above I’d love to hear from you!

Still Photos from Graves Family Reunion video…

I want to thank everyone who sent their family photos to be used in the 09 Graves Family reunion video.

I’ve added all the still photos I used to make the video slideshow to our Family and Friends digital photo album.

You can view them by clicking –> here <–.

You’ll see where I’ve started adding names, locations, etc. to the photos as captions. I’ll continue this as time allows until I’ve got them all labeled. You’ll notice in some of the photo captions that I’ve asked for help in identifying some people and places so if you recognize any of them please email me or use the “Comment” option on this page.
